UNÇÃO DOS DOENTES / ANOINTING OF THE SICK

No Sacramento da Unção dos Doentes, através do ministério do sacerdote, é Jesus quem toca os doentes para os curar do pecado – e até das doenças físicas. As suas curas eram sinais da chegada do Reino de Deus. A mensagem central da sua cura fala-nos do seu plano de vencer o pecado e a morte através da sua morte e ressurreição.

O Rito da Unção ensina-nos que não é necessário esperar até que a pessoa esteja à beira da morte para receber o Sacramento. Uma avaliação cuidadosa da gravidade da doença é suficiente.

Quando o Sacramento da Unção dos Doentes é administrado, o efeito esperado é que, se for da vontade de Deus, a pessoa seja curada fisicamente da doença. Mas mesmo que não haja cura física, o efeito principal do Sacramento é uma cura espiritual através da qual o doente recebe o dom do Espírito Santo da paz e da coragem para lidar com as dificuldades que acompanham uma doença grave ou a fragilidade da velhice.

In the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin – and even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising.

The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient.

When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.
