Há meio século a dar música
A Banda Filarmónica Nossa Senhora de Fátima (B.F.N.S.F.), de Newark, comemorou o seu 50.º aniversário de existência em 2025. Considerada uma instituição cultural no Ironbound, por onde têm passado várias gerações de músicos, o grupo surgiu em 1975 por iniciativa dos emigrantes António J. Cirne, José Rebimbas, José Valente e Francisco Gonçalves. Considera-se data de fundação como sendo dia 14 de Dezembro de 1975.
Os fundadores acima citados, eram conhecidos como a "Família Pantaleão," que integrava os membros da escola de música do maestro António J. Cirne, nas ruas East Kinney e McWhorter, em Newark, NJ. Atendendo a um apelo da paróquia de Nossa Senhora de Fátima pelo Padre José Lebre Capote, e perante o risco de dissolução do Agrupamento de Escuteiros 141 por falta de membros, os fundadores criaram a banda.
Making music for half a century
The Nossa Senhora de Fátima Philharmonic Band (B.F.N.S.F.), from Newark, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025. Considered a cultural institution in the Ironbound, having been home to several generations of musicians, the group emerged in 1975 through the initiative of emigrants António J. Cirne, José Rebimbas, José Valente, and Francisco Gonçalves. The official founding date is considered to be December 14, 1975.
The aforementioned founders were known as the "Pantaleão Family," which included members of the music school of maestro António J. Cirne, located on East Kinney and McWhorter streets in Newark, NJ. Responding to an appeal from the Nossa Senhora de Fátima parish through Father José Lebre Capote, and facing the risk of the dissolution of Scout Group 141 due to a lack of members, the founders created the band.
Na altura da fundação, o agrupemento surigiu com Banda dos Escuteiros da Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, com 15 elementos (13 primos da ‘Família Pantaleão e dois vizinhos). Nessa altura atuaram pela primeira vez participaram no "Ironbound District Bicentennial Scout Flag Day Parade." Dois anos após a sua fundação, a banda expandiu com novo uniforme e o nome de Banda Filarmónica de Nossa Senhora de Fátima (B.F.N.S.F.).
Atualmente com três dezenas de elementos, a B.F.N.S.F. está associada à paróquia do mesmo nome, em Newark, que lhe cede as instalações para os ensaios, e tem sido presença assídua nas grandes procissões da Paróquia, como seja, o Divino Espírito Santo, Santo António e Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem e outras celebrações. Também vai participando nos demais eventos de rua comunitários, nomeadamente, o desfile do Dia de Portugal na Ferry Street e não só.

At the time of its founding, the group originated as the Scout Band of the Church of Our Lady of Fatima, with 15 members (13 cousins from the 'Pantaleão Family' and two neighbors). At that time, they performed for the first time and participated in the "Ironbound District Bicentennial Scout Flag Day Parade." Two years after its founding, the band expanded with a new uniform and the name Banda Filarmônica de Nossa Senhora de Fátima (B.F.N.S.F.).
Currently with three dozen members, the B.F.N.S.F. is associated with the parish of the same name in Newark, which provides the facilities for rehearsals, and has been a constant presence in the parish's major processions, such as the Divine Holy Spirit, Saint Anthony, and Our Lady of Good Voyage, and other celebrations. It also participates in other community street events, notably the Portugal Day parade on Ferry Street, and more.
Kevin Resendes é o atual maestro da B.F.N.S.F. Além de instrumentalista é também compositor de música. Ele descreve o repertório da Banda como “mais moderno e ligeiro, com rapsódias, pop ou rock – incluindo uma peça dos ‘Xutos & Pontapés’, o que também atrai músicos mais novos." O maestro nasceu em Newark, N.J., apesar de ter depois crescido em Elizabeth, onde completou o liceu. O pai é natural de Faial da Terra no concelho de Povoação, Ilha de São Miguel (Região Aut. dos Açores) e a mãe emigrante de Canelas, concelho de Estarreja (Região da Beira).
Depois da morte de António Cirne, em 2019, acredita-se que o pai do maestro Kevin Resendes seja atualmente o elemento mais antigo da banda, uma vez que se juntou à banda dos escuteiros em 1975, apesar de se ter afastado da mesma e regressado na década de 1990.
Kevin Resendes is the current conductor of the B.F.N.S.F. Besides being an instrumentalist, he is also a composer. He describes the band's repertoire as "more modern and light, with rhapsodies, pop or rock – including a piece by 'Xutos & Pontapés', which also attracts younger musicians." The conductor was born in Newark, N.J., although he later grew up in Elizabeth, where he completed high school. His father is from Faial da Terra in the municipality of Povoação, São Miguel Island (Azores Autonomous Region), and his mother emigrated from Canelas, municipality of Estarreja (Beira Region).
Following the death of António Cirne in 2019, it is believed that the father of conductor Kevin Resendes is currently the longest-serving member of the band, having joined the scout band in 1975, although he left and returned in the 1990s.
Kevin Resendes, e sua esposa Tânia Matos, fazem um convite aos amantes da música: “quem quiser aprender música, as nossas portas estão sempre abertas. É tudo gratuito, a gente ensina qualquer instrumento de sopro, bateria, etc. É só entrarem em contato connosco. Estamos sempre à procura de músicos para dar continuidade a esta tradição." It's all free; we teach any wind instrument, drums, etc. Just get in touch with us.
