SENHORA DA BOA VIAGEM / OUR LADY OF GOOD VOYAGE

Nossa Senhora situa-se perto de nós, ao nosso lado, com seu Filho ao colo, apontando-nos o verdadeiro a bom caminho, a boa viagem para a casa do pai enquanto peregrinos na terra. Os portugueses, grandes desbrava-dores dos oceanos, em sua devoção à Virgem não poderiam deixar de invocá-la em suas arriscadas viagens. Assim, deram-lhe o título de "Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem", desde tempos imemoriais. De que existe registo, a primeira igreja erigida em terras lusitanas sob esta invocação deu-se no ano de 1618, perto de Lisboa. A devoção também aportou em locais afastados do litoral português. Por algo que só mesmo a Providência Divina pode explicar, a padroeira de uma das igrejas mais antigas construidas por portugueses, na cidade de Gloucester, Massachusetts, encontramos “The Church of Our Lady of Good Voyage”, de onde curiosamente vem o nosso primeiro pároco, o Sr. Rev. Padre José Lebre Capote.

A Santíssima Virgem é verdadeiramente aquela que aponta para Jesus, o nosso companheiro na viagem, que nos deixou Sua Mãe. Ao vermos na imagem a representação de Maria como o Menino Jesus ao colo logo nos apercebemos que a nossa viagem por este mundo será feita a sós e sem sucesso se deixarmos de sermos também seus filhos, de dizer sempre “sim” como Ela às propostas salvadoras do nosso Divino Mestre, o verdadeiro Senhor da Boa Viagem, para quem Ela constantemente aponta. O barco na mão não é representativo apenas de um dos modos de viajar, mas sim a Igreja, qual barca de salvação e que a nossa Mãe Imaculada e bendita segura firme na sua mão para que todos cheguemos sãos e salvos ao verdadeiro e único destino que Jesus Salvador e Redentor preparou para nós, o Céu.

Foi no dia 1 de Fevereiro de 1978 que o Sr. Pe. Manuel Vaz deu início à primeira reunião do convite para a festa de Nossa Senhoa da Boa Viagem, na casa da Catequese. O Sr. Manuel Pereira expôs a direcção, sendo posteriormente apresentados numa reunião com o Sr. Padre António Lebre Capote. Ficou decidido nesta reunião que a festa seria feita em Setembro, quando quase todos os paroquianos estariam de volta das suas viagens à terra natal e até mesmo de outras paragens. Estamos no ano de 1978.

No dia 1 de Setembro de 1978 voltou a realizar-se nova reunião para preparar a primeira festa. O Sr. Manuel Pereira falou sobre o custo da imagem tendo transmitido que tinha custado o total de $10,335 (escudos). Ficou acordado que cada mordomo da comissão daria uma oferta de $20.00 (dollars) para o pagamento da imagem. A imagem é em madeira cedro do Brasil e mede 1,10 metros e pesa 17 quilos. Outras duas imagens foram adquiridas posteriormente, uma que mede 1,80 metros e a mais recente, que é transportada em procissão.

A primeira festa veio a ser realizada nos dias 16 e 17 de Setembro e desde aquela semana sempre em Setembro, embora transitando mais tarde para altura do “Labor Day”. A festa é celebrada com muita assistência, momento em que muitos devotos vêm agradecer a Jesus, por intercessão de Maria, sua Mãe, de terem regressado sãos e salvos, das suas viagens a Portugal ou outras paragens de férias.

A festa da Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem projeta-nos para a realidade da feliz esperança. Somos ainda peregrinos, mas a Nossa Mãe precedeu-nos e aponta-nos o termo do caminho, que é o Seu Filho, Jesus Cristo. Repete-nos que é possível lá chegar e que, se formos fiéis a Seu Filho, lá chegaremos pois a Santíssima Virgem não é só nosso modelo de discípula, mas também auxílio dos cristãos, e cuida dos Seus filhos com solicitude maternal.

Our Lady is near us, by our side, with her Son in her arms, pointing us to the true path, the good journey to the Father's house while we are pilgrims on earth. The Portuguese, great explorers of the oceans, in their devotion to the Virgin, could not fail to invoke her on their risky voyages. Thus, they gave her the title of "Our Lady of Good Voyage," from time immemorial. As far as we know, the first church erected in Portuguese lands under this invocation occurred in the year 1618, near Lisbon. The devotion also reached places far from the Portuguese coast. By something that only Divine Providence can explain, the patron saint of one of the oldest churches built by the Portuguese, in the city of Gloucester, Massachusetts, is "The Church of Our Lady of Good Voyage," from where, curiously, comes our first parish priest, the Reverend Father José Lebre Capote.

The Blessed Virgin is truly the one who points to Jesus, our companion on the journey, who left us His Mother. When we see in the image the representation of Mary with the Child Jesus in her lap, we immediately realize that our journey through this world will be made alone and without success if we cease to also be her children, to always say "yes" as she did to the saving proposals of our Divine Master, the true Lord of Good Voyage, to whom she constantly points. The boat in her hand is not merely representative of one way of traveling, but rather the Church, as a boat of salvation, which our Immaculate and blessed Mother holds firmly in her hand so that we may all arrive safe and sound at the true and only destination that Jesus the Savior and Redeemer prepared for us: Heaven.

It was on February 1st, 1978, that Father Manuel Vaz initiated the first meeting to invite people to the feast of Our Lady of Good Voyage, at the Catechesis house. Mr. Manuel Pereira presented the board of directors, who were later introduced at a meeting with Father Antônio Lebre Capote. It was decided at this meeting that the festival would be held in September, when almost all parishioners would be back from their trips to their hometowns and even from other places. This was in 1978.

On September 1st, 1978, another meeting was held to prepare for the first festival. Mr. Manuel Pereira spoke about the cost of the image, stating that it had cost a total of $10,335 (escudos). It was agreed that each steward of the committee would contribute $20.00 (dollars) towards the payment for the image. The image is made of Brazilian cedar wood, measures 1.10 meters and weighs 17 kilos. Two other images were acquired later, one measuring 1.80 meters and the most recent one, which is carried in procession.

The first celebration took place on September 16th and 17th, and since that week it has always been held in September, although later moving to the time of "Labor Day". The celebration is attended by many, a time when many devotees come to thank Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, his Mother, for having returned safe and sound from their trips to Portugal or other holiday stops.

The feast of Our Lady of Good Voyage projects us towards the reality of joyful hope. We are still pilgrims, but Our Mother has preceded us and points us to the end of the journey, which is Her Son, Jesus Christ. She reminds us that it is possible to get there and that, if we are faithful to Her Son, we will arrive there, for the Blessed Virgin is not only our model of discipleship, but also the help of Christians, and she cares for Her children with maternal solicitude.
