IRMANDADE DE S. ANTÓNIO / SODALITY OF ST. ANTHONY

A Irmandade de Santo António de Lisboa foi a primeira organização católica no seio da comunidade portuguesa na cidade de Newark. Em 1926 foi erigida a Paróquia de São José para a comunidade galega e portuguesa. A igreja ficava situada na esquina da Prospect Street com a LaFayette Street. O prédio urbano ainda existe e pertence actualmente à Igreja do Imaculado Coração de Maria, sucessora legítima da referida paróquia de São José. O edificio também serve de anexo à Escola Primária de LaFayette School.

Nesse tempo a Liturgia era celebrada em Latim e por isso não havia diferênça linguística quanto à celebração da Santa Missa. No entanto, assim como os galegos, a comunidade lusófona, com a intênção de se reunirem à volta de uma causa, fundaram a Irmandade de Santo António de Lisboa, iniciando-se assim um convivio fraternal que se tornaria na mais antiga festa religiosa da nossa comunidade.

Estamos em meádos do século 20 e a vida do emigrante não era nada fácil. A Sociedade foi fundada para ajudar os mais necessitados da comunidade portuguesa, que então viajavam não de avião mas de navio. Naqueles anos os portugueses, na maioria homens, viviam na Monroe Street, conhecida entre os habitantes de então como Portuguese Boulevard. A Irmandade fazia o seu peditório de porta em porta, tendo uma lista extensiva e morada de todos os portugueses que viviam no bairro.

Em 7 de Junho de 1956 começa a vida na nova Paróquia de Nossa Senhora de Fátima. A irmandade que até agora usava o salão da Igreja de São José passou a usar o de São Tiago (St James Church), sita na Madison Street, mas com dificuldade, existindo infelizmente uma certa discriminação com a presença portuguesa. Com a inauguração da nova igreja, a vida da irmandade inicia novos passos, passando a fazer-se festa com arraial. A procissão, então mais pequena no itinerário passa a fazer-se por via da Ferry Street. Nesse tempo até a comunidade italiana participava nesta manifestação de fé.

Esta festa, desde o seu início, sempre foi uma ocasião de convívio de ajuda como recurso para a ajudar quem precisasse, como também para as finanças e manutenção da igreja.

A irmandade tem passado por momentos de grande expansão, e chegou a ter mais de 50 membros activos. Infelizmente também esteve em declinio, com ameaça de desaparecimento. Graças à generosidade de homens e mulheres devotos do nosso santo lisboeta, o legado da Irmandade continua entre nós hoje e com eles nos orgulhamos em festejar a festa mais antiga da paróquia, em honra do grande taumaturgo paduano, mas sempre Santo António de Lisboa. The Sodality of Saint Anthony of Lisbon was the first Catholic organization within the Portuguese community in the city of Newark. In 1926, the Parish of Saint Joseph was established for the Galician and Portuguese community. The church was located on the corner of Prospect Street and LaFayette Street. The building still exists and currently belongs to the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the legitimate successor of the aforementioned parish of Saint Joseph. The building also serves as an annex to the LaFayette Elementary School.

At that time, the Liturgy was celebrated in Latin, and therefore there was no linguistic difference regarding the celebration of Holy Mass. However, like the Galicians, the Portuguese-speaking community, with the intention of uniting around a cause, founded the Sodality of Saint Anthony of Lisbon, thus beginning a fraternal gathering that would become the oldest religious festival in our community.

It was the mid-20th century, and life for emigrants was far from easy. The Society was founded to help the most needy members of the Portuguese community, who at that time traveled not by plane but by ship. In those years, the Portuguese, mostly men, lived on Monroe Street, known among the inhabitants of the time as Portuguese Boulevard. The Sodality collected donations door-to-door, having an extensive list and address of all the Portuguese who lived in the neighborhood.

On June 7, 1956, life began in the new Parish of Our Lady of Fatima. The sodality, which until then had used the hall of St. Joseph's Church, began to use that of St. James Church, located on Madison Street, but with difficulty; unfortunately, there was some discrimination against the Portuguese presence. With the inauguration of the new church, the life of the sodality took new steps, and a festival with a fair began to be held. The procession, then shorter in its route, began to be made via Ferry Street. Back then, even the Italian community participated in this expression of faith, since, they too have a great devotion to Saint Anthony.

This festival, from its beginning, has always been an occasion for fellowship and helping others in need, as well as contributing to the finances and maintenance of the church.

The Sodality has experienced periods of great expansion, reaching over 50 active members. Unfortunately, it was also in decline, threatened with extinction. Thanks to the generosity of men and women devoted to our Lisbon saint, the legacy of the Sodality continues among us today, and with them we are proud to celebrate the oldest festival of the parish, in honor of the great Paduan miracle worker, but always Saint Anthony of Lisbon.
